SNELLVILLE – A day-long celebration to mark the Grand Opening of The Grove at Towne Center will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.

“This is a celebration we’ve been waiting to invite the community to for more than 20 years,” said Mayor Barbara Bender. “For decades we have been working to create a downtown destination that offers a unique experience for residents and visitors alike. The day we have been waiting for has finally come.”

The community celebration kicks off with the Morning Stretch from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the lawn. Instructors from the city’s Active Adult Center and Burn Boot Camp will lead free yoga and exercise sessions in the heart of The Grove on the green in front of the event pavilion. 

The event features music from a DJ all day. The Splash Pad will be open and there will be face painting, games, and bounce houses to entertain children. Dignitaries will speak at 3 p.m. followed by a ribbon cutting.

At 4 p.m. The Happy Hour will take the stage under the pavilion. The group is an Atlanta-based multi-genre musical trio known for high-energy performances that blend modern rock and pop.

Food Passports will be sold onsite for $30 which will allow patrons to enjoy food and drink samples from all of the eateries in The Grove from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to use the free parking deck next to the Tomlin apartment building. The deck is accessible from Wisteria Drive, North Road and at an entrance off of Oak Road to the left of the Elizabeth H. Williams Library. 

About The Grove at Towne Center

The Grove at Towne Center is a $140 million public/private Partnership between the City of Snellville, Gwinnett County, MidCity Real Estate Partners and CASTO. The project centers around “The Grove,” which was a meeting place for residents and travelers heading to and from Atlanta and Athens a century ago. The project features nine new buildings and a 750-space parking deck.

The Grove at Towne Center is the largest project the City of Snellville has ever undertaken. The concept of a downtown district took root in the late 1990s with a city study being performed in 2003. City officials kept the dream alive in their imaginations and on paper over the last 20 years. Groundbreaking for the project occurred in March 2021. 

In an effort to safely discard unused and expired medication, there will be a Drug Enforcement Agency Drug Take Back hosted by the Snellville Police Department April 25.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Snellville Police Department, 2315 Wisteria Drive.

Participants can drive or walk up and drop off discarded medication into the drop boxes. Medication may be left in its original containers with or without the labels as all items discarded are burned.

Please do not bring needles or sharp objects for disposal.

SNELLVILLE – The Snellville Senior Center is now officially the Active Adult Center.

The move was made official to match the age requirements for current membership since the center, located next to City Hall at 2350 Oak Road, allows anyone over the age of 50 to join and participate in all activities and programs offered.

“Our original building funding grant required that the building be labeled as the Snellville Senior Center,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Lisa A Platt, CPRP. “However, we have never felt that title was an accurate representation of the membership, as anyone over 50 is eligible to join. By officially changing the name to Snellville Active Adult Center we feel we will now have a more welcoming feel to all 50 and over who can benefit from the center‘s programs.” 

The programs and activities will remain the same, it is only the facility title that is being changed, city officials said. 

“We believe that by making this change, it will help those who are in their 50s and 60s to know that our programs and events are designed for them as well,” said Active Adult Center Supervisor Kathi Gargiulo. “So many of them need to be taking advantage of all these fun things that we are doing.”  

The Active Adult Center has a membership of 811. The center offers 20 different programs and classes, day and overnight trips, five different groups that meet regularly and six special events throughout the year. 

Annual membership at the Active Adult Center is:

• Snellville city limit residents - $20 per person
• County/non-city limit residents - $35 per person
• Out of county residents - $45 per person
• Additional persons from the same residence receive a $5 discount.

As the holiday season begins, Snellville Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies nationwide in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. From Dec. 10 through Jan. 1, officers will increase patrols and traffic enforcement to help reduce impaired driving and keep local roadways safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 12,429 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2023, representing nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities nationwide. December remains one of the most dangerous months of the year, with 1,038 drunk-driving deaths occurring in December 2023 alone. Federal data also shows that the month has experienced some of the highest drunk-driving fatality totals in the past fifteen years. These statistics highlight why enhanced enforcement and public awareness are vital during the holiday travel season.

Throughout the campaign period, officers from Snellville Police Department will be conducting increased patrols, traffic stops, and sobriety checks. The purpose of this effort is not simply to issue citations, but to prevent tragic and entirely avoidable collisions by stopping impaired drivers before serious or fatal crashes occur. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over initiative is part of a broader national effort encouraging responsible decision-making, whether that means planning ahead for a sober ride, choosing a designated driver, using a rideshare or taxi service, or making other arrangements to avoid driving impaired.

The public can support this effort by celebrating responsibly, making transportation plans in advance if alcohol will be involved, and helping friends or family members avoid driving while impaired. Anyone who observes a driver who appears to be under the influence is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.

Chief Perry shared the department’s message to the community: “Driving impaired is one of the most preventable causes of traffic deaths in our country. This holiday season, we ask everyone to do their part, plan ahead, make safe choices, and help keep our roads safe for all. The lives we save may be those of our neighbors, friends, or loved ones.”

The Snellville Police Department has been recognized by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety during the 26th Annual Governor’s Challenge Awards, earning second place overall in its statewide category and first place statewide in Distracted Driving Enforcement and Education.

The Governor’s Challenge Awards are Georgia’s premier law enforcement recognition program, celebrating agencies that demonstrate outstanding commitment to highway safety through education, enforcement and community engagement. This year’s ceremony, held in Macon, marked more than two decades of honoring excellence among state, local, campus and military law enforcement agencies.

The Governor’s Challenge highlights innovative, results-driven approaches to reducing traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities across Georgia. Agencies are evaluated not only for enforcement initiatives but also for creative problem-solving, effective community outreach and policies that promote safe driving behaviors. The program aligns with national priorities including impaired driving prevention, occupant protection and speed reduction, while also encouraging efforts to address local concerns such as distracted driving, pedestrian safety and young driver education.

“These honors reflect the hard work and dedication of every officer committed to keeping our community safe through proactive enforcement, education, and engagement,” said SPD Chief Greg Perry. “It’s a testament to our department’s continued focus on excellence and service.”

A special acknowledgment was extended to Lieutenant Poole for his outstanding work in preparing the department’s award submission. His professionalism and attention to detail helped showcase the Snellville Police Department’s excellence in highway safety on a statewide stage.
